Building Automation System
A Building Automation System (BAS) is a centralized network of hardware and software that monitors and controls a facility’s mechanical and electrical operations, such as HVAC, lighting, and security. Often called an “autopilot” for buildings, it maximizes energy efficiency, minimizes operational costs, and enhances occupant comfort.
How It Works
A BAS relies on three main components to function automatically:
- Sensors: Gather real-time data on environmental conditions like temperature, humidity, and occupancy.
- Controllers: Process the sensor data against preset algorithms to determine the necessary adjustments (e.g., turning off lights in an empty room or reducing air conditioning).
- Actuators: The physical mechanisms that execute the commands, such as opening/closing valves or adjusting dampers.

- HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning): Regulates temperature and indoor air quality.
- Lighting Systems: Automates dimming and scheduling based on natural light or room occupancy.
