DALI CONTROL SYSTEM
A Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) Control System is an intelligent lighting control solution that enables digital communication between lighting fixtures, control devices, and a centralized management system. Based on the international IEC 62386 standard, DALI provides individual addressing, monitoring, and control of each lighting device, allowing users to optimize energy consumption, enhance occupant comfort, and simplify lighting management in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.
Key Components
A standard DALI Control System consists of four main parts:
DALI Controller: The central control unit that manages communication between all DALI devices, executes lighting commands, and stores control logic such as schedules and scenes.
DALI Devices: Addressable lighting equipment, including LED drivers, electronic ballasts, relays, dimmers, and emergency lighting units that receive and respond to digital commands.
Control Devices: User interfaces such as wall-mounted switches, push buttons, touch panels, occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, and software applications that initiate lighting control commands.
DALI Bus Network: A two-wire communication bus that carries both power and digital control signals between the controller and all connected DALI devices, enabling reliable bidirectional communication.
Primary Functions
Individual and Group Lighting Control: Allows each luminaire to be controlled independently or grouped together for synchronized operation, providing flexible lighting management.
Scene Management and Scheduling: Enables predefined lighting scenes and automatic scheduling to create the desired lighting environment for different activities and times of day.
Energy Efficiency: Reduces energy consumption through dimming control, occupancy detection, daylight harvesting, and automated lighting schedules.
System Monitoring and Diagnostics: Continuously monitors the operational status of connected devices, detects faults, reports lamp or driver failures, and simplifies maintenance through centralized diagnostics.
Types of Systems
Standalone DALI System: Controls a single DALI network with local switches or controllers, making it suitable for individual rooms, classrooms, meeting rooms, or small office spaces.
Networked DALI System: Integrates multiple DALI networks through gateways and centralized software, allowing coordinated lighting management across large buildings or campuses.
Building Management Integrated DALI System: Connects the DALI lighting network with a Building Management System (BMS) using protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, or KNX, enabling centralized monitoring, automation, and energy management throughout the entire facility.
